The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a federally funded, private, nonprofit grant making organization that works to support freedom around the world, seeks a Temporary Event Manager for the World Movement for Democracy. This position is based in Washington, D.C. with possible travel to Tunisia. This position is a temporary position, and is for January 1, 2020 until December 31, 2020.

 

 

 

The World Movement for Democracy is a global network that brings together democrats, including activists, practitioners, scholars, policy makers, and funders, to advance democracy around the world. The goal of the World Movement is to strengthen efforts to build democracy through sharing knowledge, information, and strategies. NED serves as the World Movement Secretariat, and the Temporary Event Manager will work with the Secretariat staff.

 

 

Position Summary:

 

Every two years the World Movement hosts a global assembly, which brings together more than 450 civil society activists, scholars, journalists, political figures, and business leaders from around the world to discuss challenges to democracy. The World Movement’s 10<sup>th</sup> assembly will be held in Tunis, Tunisia in November 2020. An Event Manager will oversee all logistical arrangements for the assembly and assist in developing elements of the assembly program. This position is a temporary position, and is for January 1, 2020 until December 31, 2020.

 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Project Management
    • Manage all aspects of logistics and onsite administration of the global assembly by working closely with a local event management company and other vendors;
    • Work with NED’s Finance Department to ensure procurement compliance and vender contract fulfilment;
    • Oversee travel and lodging arrangements for assembly participants;
    • Assist the Director, Senior Manager, and NED Finance Department in managing the assembly budget;
    • Assist the Director and Senior Manager in formulating elements of the global assembly agenda and design activities accordingly; and
    • Manage the production of the assembly report.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge/Experience:
    • BA in a relevant discipline;
    • 5+ years’ of experience managing large international events for high-profile participants abroad;
    • Experience coordinating diverse teams to achieve expected outcomes;
    • Experience negotiating and managing contracts with vendors and ensuring adequate vendor performance;
    • Experience managing budgets, including tracking spending rates;
    • Proficiency with Microsoft programs, and online event management assistance platforms;
    • Networking experience preferred; and

 

  • Other Qualifications:
    • Understanding of democracy, human rights, advocacy, and/or international relations issues preferred.
    • Proficiency in French and/or Arabic preferred.
    • Authorized to work in the United States.

 

  • Competencies:
    • Ability to work in a team with a strong sense of mission;
    • High degree of organization and initiative with strong attention to detail;
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
