Assistant Editor, Journal of Democracy (JOD) – (Job #2033)

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a federally funded, private, nonprofit grant-making organization in Washington, D.C., seeks an Assistant Editor for the Journal of Democracy (JOD), a quarterly publication that addresses the problems and prospects of democracy around the world. This position is based in Washington, D.C.


Position Summary:

The Assistant Editor will be involved in all aspects of the Journal of Democracy’s editorial operations, including editing, proofreading, carrying out research, performing information-management tasks, and providing administrative support to the Coeditor. 



  • Editorial and Research Support:
    • Research, write, and edit the “Back of the Book” section of the JOD.
    • Edit select projects and features for the Journal’s print and online content.
    • Copyedit, fact-check, and carry out background research on manuscripts.
    • Manage the editorial review process for unsolicited manuscripts.
    • Oversee correspondence with authors, potential authors, subscribers, and publishers, and address inquiries as they arise.
    • Assist the associate editor with management of the JOD website, and assist with tracking publicity for JOD articles.
    • Assist with the preparation of special JOD online and print content and books for the JOD book series.


  • Administrative Support:
    • Perform administrative tasks for the JOD Coeditor.
    • Manage all electronic and paper files for the JOD and Coeditor.



  • Knowledge/Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., political science, international relations, history);
    • 2+ years of editorial experience and/or experience in democracy, human rights or related field;
    • Computer skills: experience with Microsoft Office required; familiarity with InDesign preferred.


  • Other Qualifications:
    • Some editorial experience preferred;
    • Strong writing and editing skills;
    • Authorized to work in the United States.

    • Attention to detail;
    • Excellent verbal and written communication and solid organizational skills.
