The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a federally funded, private, nonprofit grantmaking organization that works to support freedom around the world, seeks an Associate Editor for the Center for International Media Assistance (CIMA). The position is based in Washington, D.C.


Position Summary:

The Associate Editor of CIMA reports to CIMA’s Associate Director / Editor and is responsible for substantive components of CIMA’s research and publications program, including supporting the development of research ideas, coordinating publications efforts and working with writers across the globe.



  • Produce original research and written content for CIMA’s publications and presentations;
  • Assist Editor and Deputy Editor in the execution of CIMA’s research agenda and publications pipeline;
  • Support digital formatting and uploading of CIMA’s digital reports;
  • Help coordinate report contributions from writers across the globe;
  • Contribute to CIMA’s blog and social media campaigns;
  • Facilitate coordination with NED program staff, including consulting with the NED’s regional experts about potential contributors to CIMA’s publications, blogs and events;
  • Work with CIMA Associate Director and CIMA Deputy Editor to coordinate publications calendar and pipeline;
  • Edit and wordsmith content while adapting for the voice, tone, and style of multiple audiences, including reports, blogs, website content and social media content;
  • Create associated products from reports including Executive Summary, Briefing Notes and website content where relevant;
  • Support the integration of visual content into publications;
  • Collaborate with graphic designers, video editors, and other editors;
  • Attend relevant internal and external meetings, conference, and events as assigned by Associate Director or Senior Director;
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Knowledge/Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced studies or graduate certificate/degree preferred;
    • 2+ years of relevant work experience in international development or democracy assistance programs, with experience in international media development preferred.
    • Experience in journalism or media development and online communications, including web-based publishing, social media and other digital platforms;
    • Previous editorial experience, and demonstrated experience producing substantive written material, is highly desired. 


  • Other Qualifications:
    • Knowledge of international media issues and/or democracy promotion programs; Experience living and working overseas is an asset;
    • Proficiency in a second language is an asset;
    • Authorized to work in the United States.

    • Ability to learn and grasp new technologies, including content management platforms;
    • Attention to detail, and high degree of organization and initiative;
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
