The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a federally funded, private, nonprofit grantmaking organization that works to support freedom around the world, seeks a Staff Accountant.  The position is based in Washington, D.C.

 

Position Summary:

The Staff Accountant reports to the Accounting Manager and performs a variety of daily financial, bookkeeping, and administrative tasks in support of the Finance Department.  Responsibilities include, among others: supporting the monthly and annual financial statement closings, preparing journal entries and account reconciliations, monitoring the daily bank activity, providing support and backstopping for other general accounting functions, etc.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the monthly and year-end financial closings by reconciling balance sheet accounts monthly, including all bank & investment accounts.
  • Prepares monthly recurring journal entries, including recognition of prepaid expenses and is responsible for maintaining other asset and liability accounts.
  • Maintains the fixed asset records on a perpetual basis (acquisitions/disposals) and generates related amortization & depreciation entries monthly.
  • Prepares adjusting/reclassification general ledger entries as needed.
  • Conducts daily monitoring of bank accounts for all transactions and alerts appropriate staff of any issues.
  • Responsible for incoming deposit activity and prepares related Cash/Accounts Receivable entries for review/approval. Reconciles and tracks detail for all donations received.
  • Applies payments made on a daily basis for both Grantee & Vendor Payment activity.
  • Assists with maintenance of vendor beneficiary records in the accounting system as well as on the banking platform.
  • Prepares invoices for any external billings and records in the accounting system.
  • Serves as backup to Accounts Payable and Grants Payable staff.
  • Supports the annual audit by preparing assigned schedules and readying supporting documentation for samples selected.
  • Maintains individual work to the designated network/system locations to ensure ongoing audit readiness.
  • Responds to all information requests from colleagues in a timely and professional manner.
  • Works on special projects as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge/Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field;
    • 2+ years of relevant work experience, preferably in a mission-driven, non-profit environment;
    • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting principles and best practices;
    • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics NAV (Serenic Navigator) preferred;
    • Working knowledge of OMB Uniform Guidance and experience in applying the underlying cost principles in a federal grant environment is preferred.

 

  • Other Qualifications:
    • Solid analytical, problem solving, and financial troubleshooting skills;
    • Authorized to work in the United States.
