The Reagan-Fascell program is an international exchange program that hosts democracy activists, civil society leaders, human rights defenders, journalists, scholars, and practitioners from around the world in residence at NED’s International Forum for Democratic Studies, during which time they conduct research, writing, and outreach on topics relating to democracy; share best practices and lessons learned; exchange ideas and experiences with counterparts; and build ties with a global network of democracy advocates. The program hosts two cohorts of Fellows per year (October–February and March–July).

Summary: The Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program seeks to hire up to three Research Associates for the 2021–2022 fellowship year (anticipated dates of employment: September 2021–August 2022). This is a one-year position, renewable for up to two years.

Responsibilities: Each Research Associate is assigned to work closely with several Fellows per cohort. Duties include:

  • consulting with Fellows on the shape and direction of their projects
  • providing research, written, and editorial support for Fellows’ projects and products
  • facilitating Fellows’ networking and outreach
  • aiding in the preparation and follow-up of Fellows’ presentations
  • helping foreign Fellows (and their families, as needed) acclimate to life in Washington, D.C.
  • assisting select Fellows with professional placements in the post-fellowship period
  • aiding staff with programmatic and administrative assignments, including the annual competition, events, publications, and promotion.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and Experience:
    • A. in political science or a related field required
    • 0–2 years of work experience
    • Web and computer proficiency (especially Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
    • Knowledge of one or more foreign languages preferred
    • Experience living, working, or studying abroad a plus
    • Authorized to work in the United States
  • Competencies:
    • Successful applicants will: have a keen interest in democracy and human rights; international development, the social sciences, or area studies.
    • Possess excellent research and writing skills.
    • Demonstrate professionalism and strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well in a team setting; and
    • Display a dedication to international exchange and to supporting individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Duration: The Fellowships Program seeks to hire up to three full-time Research Associates (RAs) at 40 hours per week for the period September 2021–August 2022. RAs are expected to commit to work for the entire duration of the fellowship year. RAs serve as temporary full-time employees, with benefits.
