The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), is a congressionally funded, private, nonprofit grant-making organization that works to support freedom around the world and is seeking a Senior Director for the Center for International Media Assistance within the NED. The position is based in Washington, D.C.

The Center for International Media Assistance (CIMA) is a specialized think tank with links to international cooperation on democracy and governance. CIMA is dedicated to improving global efforts to promote independent media in developing countries. CIMA strives to build a foundation of knowledge for media development donors, implementers, and civil society actors on best practices and solutions for improving media systems. We do this because we believe media plays an indispensable role in the creation and development of sustainable democracies.

Position Summary:

The Senior Director of CIMA will lead a globally respected program that has helped define the field of media development for country-level practitioners, international donors, scholars, and implementers of media-strengthening programs. You will head a collaborative team that produces research reports and convenes expert meetings and working groups on the problems facing the news media across the world.

The Senior Director will engage regularly with leadership and grantmaking staff of the National Endowment for Democracy on its efforts to support democratic transitions around the world, acting as an expert on panels and committees in Washington and other world capitals, and deepening CIMA’s institutional partnerships for impact and effectiveness.

The ideal candidate will be a visionary and strategic leader, with a demonstrated ability to engage creatively and substantively with NED programs as well as with other research-oriented organizations, including universities, think tanks, policy institutes, governments, and media. The candidate will lead CIMA’s efforts to maintain its thought leadership at a time of severe strains on independent media and constantly shifting political and technological challenges.

Responsibilities: 

  • Manage staff and expand CIMA’s network of talented writers, analysts, and researchers
  • Work with the Associate Director and Editor to oversee the conceptualization, fine-tuning, and production of CIMA’s research reports
  • Build internal knowledge and expertise on media development, governance, aid effectiveness, and democracy support programs
  • Serve as expert and moderator for public events both at CIMA and with media development partners around the globe
  • Develop areas of regional expertise to better understand the needs and gaps in media development
  • The position will require occasional travel

Qualifications:

Knowledge/Experience: (formal degree requirements and years of relevant job experience required):

  • Graduate degree required
  • A minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible work experience in international development, democracy support, editing, research or journalism
  • Native-level proficiency in English required, proficiency in a foreign language desirable
  • Demonstrated experience producing original, peer-reviewed research reports or papers desired
  • Background in international development, governance, public policy reform, or democracy assistance programs desired

Other Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of international media issues and democracy promotion programs
  • Regional expertise and interest, such as Asia, Middle East, and North Africa (MENA), Central Asia or Africa
  • Willingness and ability to travel
  • Authorized to work in United States

  • Ability to learn, grasp, and analyze new technologies, internet governance; and ability to oversee the work of staff working on these topics
  • High degree of organization and initiative
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
